Coxswain Courses
Through our relationship with Ädventure Sailing”and “Maritime Training School” in Sydney, we are accredited to offer training in the following coxswain courses. These courses will soon be uniquely available as live aboard utilising the 65ft ketch, Starsand.
Coxswain Grade 1 – command a vessel up to 12m with paying passengers.
Coxswain Grade 2 – command a vessel up to 12m without paying passengers.
Coxswain Grade 3 / Exemption 38 – command a vessel up to 12m and operate propulsion power for an inboard engine <100kW or outboard engine <250kW in daylight hours only.
Learning Options
These courses can be delivered in one of two ways:
Blended Learning – self paced, with a mix of study at home, online learning and two days of practical training
OR
In Person – A face-to-face intensive course held in Busselton, which includes practical training and assessment. This is 10 days for Coxswain Grade 1 or 2, or 3 days for Grade 3 / Exemption 38.
Sea Service Requirements Coxswain Grade 1
While working on a deck or deck and engineering capacity, the applicant must have at least:
30 days’ qualifying sea service on commercial vessels ≥5 m long, and a completed approved task book; or
240 days’ qualifying sea service on vessels ≥5 m long which all may be accrued on recreational vessels, without a task book.

Sea Service Requirements Coxswain Grade 2
The applicant must have at least:
7 days qualifying sea service on commercial or recreational vessels, and a completed approved task book;
OR
60 days qualifying sea service on commercial or recreational vessels. Note: applicants completing task books must have them signed off by a qualified supervisor; this includes any tasks completed on a recreational vessel.

Course Outcomes – Coxswain Grade 1
The holder of this Coxswain Grade 1 certificate can:
Command and operate a vessel <12 m long in inshore waters, carrying passengers and with propulsion power;
for an inboard engine – < 500 kW; or
for an outboard engine – unlimited; and
Under the same propulsion power limits, command and operate vessel <12m long as a tender or auxiliary vessel
within 3 nm of a parent vessel in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ);
within waters designated for a specific purpose by a state or territory authority which permits holders of this certificate to operate (subject to any conditions that it may impose).
Course Outcomes – Coxswain Grade 2
The holder of this Coxswain Grade 2 certificate can:
Command and operate engines of a vessel <12 m long that is not carrying passengers:
in sheltered waters or within 5 nm from point of departure, shore base or aquaculture lease; and
with propulsion power:
for an inboard engine – <100 kW unless endorsed to <500 kW inboard propulsion; or
for an outboard engine – unlimited
Command and operate the engines of a vessel that is not carrying passengers:
as a tender or auxiliary vessel within 3 nm of a parent vessel in the EEZ; and
with propulsion power:
for an inboard engine – <100 kW unless endorsed to <500 kW inboard propulsion; or
for an outboard engine – unlimited.
